Portfolio and Presentation Evaluation

Over the second year I feel I have generated a number of high quality pieces of work which have come together in my portfolio. My portfolio has a good range of work, from animation, typography, packaging, digital illustration and branding. This benefits me as a designer, showing clients i have diversity and a wide range of skills and experiences. My portfolio has improved alot since the first year, this is basically due to my commitment on the course also improving, and therefore a higher standard of work has been produced.

When evaluating myself and preparing my presentation, I realised the second year of the course has been great for me. I have developed into a professional designer by taking on client live briefs. Also my confidence as a designer has significantly risen, i now take on any brief with confidence and am not afraid to try something new. Over the year I think i have produced more original work and kept each project fresh. As I go into the third year I'm aiming to improve the finishing and visualisation of my work. Photographing it in context and to a high standard is something i need to improve, and the the result of doing so will allow me to present my work in the best possible way.

As for work experience, i don't currently have a placement, however I have gained a lot of client experience this year with the Fashion Show Tickets and dNA Flyer design projects this year.

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Organisation and Time Management. These are two areas I feel I have improved on massively lately due to the high amount of work I've had. I enjoy the challenge of working at a fast-pace and am committed to my work to give it all of my time.

What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
I have become more effective in the design stage of my practice, when generating ideas I use other sources such as dictionaries and thesauruses to help input new words into my work. This helps to solve any problems too. I like to research throughout the project, picking up new visual inspiration as i go rather than finding it all at once at the start, I find is more useful to my work.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I can work fast and juggle multiple projects well, I enjoyed this module, even at times when it was a bit hectic and stressful, I wanted to produce the work I was designing and kept this mentality throughout the project. I believe I can produce good quality of final outcomes, I was pleased with my presentation boards as I put so much time and work into the content of each one, to see 5 weeks of hard work resolved into a number of displays is a great feeling.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
The main weaknesses in my work would be creating a large range of ideas for a project, rather than just going with one from a small number.. I've always done this and I think an improved work plan, with a regimented development time would give me the opportunity to change this.

Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
A weekly work plan - To finalise my organisation, and allow the correct amount of time for different areas in my design.
Increase in research to further inspire my designs for the projects and allows my work to take new paths.
More initial idea generation to give me a larger number of routes to take for a project.

Here are my final book covers for the Faber & Faber brief. The focus was on typography, I interpreted the books contents into the cover type, by clipping appropriate photographs.

Taxi Driver = A yellow poster, with folds to add some detail. - Relating to the yellow cabs of NY.
Donnie Darko = A head-on shot of a light bulb, lit. Relating to the books/films use of light, such as time-travel/day/night/electricity..
28 days Later = A red ink splattered page; cut, torn and scrunched to add dishevelment. Relating to the bloodbath and violence of the book/film.

I photographed the batteries in context, alongside other collectables such as gizmo from the hit 90s film; Gremlins, Spiderman , The Simpsons, and Star Wars memorabilia. This helps to focus my product as a collectable, as its shown alongside others on the shelf. Also shots of the batteries in electrical products; a Gameboy Color and digital camera, something which has become a collectable (the Gameboy) and something which the batteries target age range uses frequently (the camera). To determine scale, I photographed the batteries in-hand, I think its quite a nice shot to have on my final boards too.

The Fashion Show '09 - Update

Here are the VERY final tickets.
Fashion decided to go against gold foil printing as costs were just too high to print.
Also I have produced a duotone version to bring costs down.
'Guest' is now in-place of 'VIP', and other small details have been made.
A 3mm bleed leaves room for trimming error.
Tickets have been handed to Fashion and will be printed in due course.

Following the amendments required, I then produced a screen and heat-pressed a gold foil print onto the back of the VIP ticket. The outcome was successful, however not perfect as slight trails of gold fall over the ticket. Still, not bad for a mock up at all.

After designing the logo, I was aked to further it and design a flyer advertising the exhibition.
I was given a spec sheet including sizes, copy, colour, image ect. I think I delivered a clean, modern and dynamic flyer design for which they asked for.
I found the trickiest part of the design was incorporating the map onto the back without it over-powering the text or looking complicated and a nightmare to make sense of. A careful choice of colour and helvetica helped out here, as well as google maps.

The flyer will be printed professionally 5000 copies! and also the logo will be printed onto balloons and other media for the exhibition.
Hard work pays off.

I have found my forté within the industry, in branding and logo design I think I can work effectively.
I get a buzz from nailing a logo, then to see it being used is a great inspiration and spurs me on to do more.
Of the 3 briefs I choose, at least one will be a logo brief.

Typography Module Evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module, and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Iv definitely improved my digital skills; working with Quark has made me work more precise with type and layout, learning new editing skills within the software, I now feel confident using Quark. My eye for good type has become more alert; I can identify typefaces more and appreciate good type when I see it.

What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
I now spend more time on developing ideas and concepts on paper before going straight to the computer, this is a much faster way of working for me and generates stronger results. Also, from a type point of view I test my work with different fonts and sizes, printing hard copies to see what exactly the outcome would be.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think I’m quite productive when concept working, the idea behind a design and what it communicates I believe is key to the design, therefore I dedicate most of my time on developing a designs concept to generate something impressive. I think I sway more towards logo and branding design, and feel I can apply type effectively within this area of design, I plan to continue to design logos and use my type skills to aid me.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
I feel I could have explored a broader range of type more in my journal, perhaps this is because I don’t have so much interest in some areas of type however. Also my analysis of found type could be more in depth and critical.

A logo I recently designed for a college exhibition; 'Material Matters' consisting of work produced from students on the BA (Hons) Fine Art course. The exhibition is held at the college in May and also The Atrium in St James Hospital.
The logo incorporates the dNA letters in a stylistic and dynamic visual.

Here are the crisp packets which compete with Doritos UK market, they sit next to Doritos on the shelves.
ALL of these packs have some Mexican theme behind them, various packs use a more traditional typeface (Phileas Fogg, Morrisons own, Casa Fiesta and Trato's). Most use related colours, bright yellow and orange for that Mexican flare and some have a washed colour to show tradition and age-old recipe.

Tesco even use a stereotypical Mexican man!

This may be a sign to avoid whats already out there but I would happily buy a pack of Tortillas assuming they had a traditional Mexican flavour by the appearance of the packet, rather than a pack of Tortillas that have no resemblence to Mexican tradition.

Further research/surveying will determine our choice of Mexican Tradition or not.

NYC based design firm Zoya.
Their identity and logo designs are fresh and miles away from anything cheesy/cringeworthy, same can be said for their animation work which frequently handles statistics, delivering them in an interesting and viewable manner, not bombarding people with technical info. They have a simplistic eye for design, reminding me of swiss design which has always had my interest.

Flag is a Swiss based design firm, with similar style and work ethics as those from the 1930s posters. I like how they use type and image simply yet effectively. Flag work essentially
for art and cultural projects such as catalogues, artists books, magazines and posters.
They also do drawings and illustrations for editorials and private projects. The two founders of the firm both teach design in schools in Switzerland.

Here is the second part of the 'Good' project. A screen-printed cooking apron.
The apron would be a product sold to the public who want to show their support for their butcher. As the proceeds from the apron would go to 'The Butchers Society'.
The apron is rolled and tied with string to represent a joint of meat, the price tag shows the print on the front and price with breidf description and cause on the reverse.

Here is the A1 poster i produced for the 'Good' project. Im promoting and directing the public to eat meat and support their local butchers. i took inspiration from russian constructivism and 1930s poster designers such as A.M Cassandre. the poster is intended to be displayed in shop windows across the nation; butchers, pubs, newsagents ect.

SCREEN-PRINTING

After cleaning, coating with emulsion, exposing and drying the screen, i pinned my blank apron onto the padded table, ready to print my screen onto.

I placed my exposed screen face down onto my apron, then sturdied it with weights.

Apply a line of paint at the top of the screen, then pull downfirmly with a squeegee, thus forcing paint through the open mesh and onto the apron. Press the squeegee back upwards to collect the paint at the top again. Repeat this process 4 times for material prints.

Once printed, clean the paint from the screen with a sponge and hose, leave screen in the drying room.

I think the imagery and design is to its maximum, considering the limitations of only using two colours.
I particularly like the page of 'info graphics', incorporating an overlay of technical drawings on type makes this page much more interesting than others.

Here are two examples of innovative printing.
Both the Muji catalogue and IDN magazine have a gloss overlay printed onto the front covers, they look very appealing when the items are in your hands and you can see the light catching the gloss printed imagery.

Another Bloody Water

Another Bloody Water is a new bottled water brand that was designed by Subgroup Design and is now on the market in Australia.
According to Jay Dillon, the director of Subgroup: "It tends to stand out on the shelves, by not standing out. Whilst all the other brands are fighting on the shelf with the same old cascasding water falls and water droplets etc. Our clear invisible bottle makes a focus of the water inside. Because after all it's just another bloody water, right!"
The whole back of the bottle is taken up with amusing copy that tells the story behind the brand:
Since we unceremoniously (some say rudely) barged our way into the overcrowded bottled water market with a good-looking bottle, a smartarse name and a devil may care attitude it has come to our attention that our competitors don’t like us*. They think we are taking the piss. That we mock the overly flowery, exaggerated language and the poorly drawn waterfalls and diagrams of volcanos on their labels. They think that we are not taking the serious aquatic science of bottled water…well seriously.

So to quash any future smear campaign and rumour mongering they may come up with, we’re going to set the record straight right here. Smart Alec name – yes. Just another water – no.

First up our water is bloody good. Better than most. It comes from a spring, high in the Victorian Alps, which is a bloody long drive from civilisation (see: pollution). The only farms in the area are organic which means no nasty pesticides or any of those other evil poisons end up in the water. In fact we deal with the rampant blackberry problem by setting our deer on them. It’s a tough gig for the deer but they seem to like it. And while we’re blowing our own trumpet independent Government approved laboratories have done tests and they reckon it’s lower in sodium than all other major brands on the Australian market. Did we say it tastes bloody good?

So there you go, Doubting Thomas competitors – cards on the table. Enjoy Another Bloody Water, everyone. And then when you’re done with that enjoy another Another Bloody Water. And so on.

* We don’t actually know if our competitors don’t like us. But being ‘competitors’ we’re pretty sure they don’t.

Here is one of the flipbooks i created for the 'Speaking From Experience' project towards the end of my first year at Design College.
The 3 books show the new students (who are unfamiliar with their new surroundings) the route to take to get to key locations in the college for which a graphic designer depends on. The last image (book 1 of 3), gives a route to the Digital Print Studio, taking the student from the College entrance right through to the Studio's door. Then when the book is upturned, a 360 degree view of the print studio can be 'flipped' to view.

My final outcome is aimed at adults which have an experience in business, and may need the services of an interpreter. I chose a formal and proffessional design throughout the package, including humour and clever use of the companies services with the poster; to intrest the reader and thus gain more clients to the company. I also considered sight and hearing impaired persons through use of sign language illustrations for the poster and braille on the envelope and business card. The braille reads correct; the company name, and telephone number. The reader can then contact The Interpreters and inquire about our services in conversation. - I think these are two key elements to my outcome, they show the company covers a range of different translation, rather than the expected foreign languages...

- To improve the overall mail, i would state the fact that The Interpreters do translate foreign languages, something i somehow missed!

FLAG is a graphic design studio established in 2002 by Bastien Aubry (*1974) and
Dimitri Broquard (*1969) in Zurich, Switzerland. Since then FLAG is working essentially

Here's a video from 'Bones Magazine.co.uk'
They're a web-based magazine, which subscribers can download their monthly podcast from itunes for free. The videos are bursting with graphics, you don't really know where to look or what to focus on as things are moving constantly.. Their videos however, do portray a subject/emotion, this the 'hardcore' issue of the magazine.
I like the way they deliver their work, through podcasts and online reports, i think it suits the younger generation and is an insight into how design could be communicated in the future.

Stanley Donwood has taken the role of designing and creating the album work for nearly all of the band Radioheads' records. I find his style of artwork really interesting, it's different and looks asif it has texture, when really its just flat graphics. He creates large scale images, which have a powerful content of dramatic buildings , mountains and landscapes. I like his use of mixed media and techniques, his works consist of; paint, digital & hand-generated illustration, photography, typography, and packaging design.

This film clip uses a creative technique using typography.
The creator used stop-motion filming; compiling a series of photographs to create a film.
I like how the type spreads and 'takes over' the woman's body. I think the black and white contrast works really well to produce a powerful piece of film.

I have continued the project with the focus on annoying things.
Developing ideas for the 100 book, i decided to use information from other people rather than just my own opinion on what i find annoying.

Over reading week i produced a CD of 100 annoying noises.
I wanted to use a different medium for the project, as a means of broadening my skills...
I chose to use sound, purchased a dictaphone and began to record annoying sounds.
I chose the 'annoying sounds' over any other type of sounds as i thought it was more of an interesting subject.
I based the annoying noises on a mix of my own opinions and others by gathering market research with questionnaires.

His mix of highly detailed hand-drawn imagery with precise digital graphics give his work an edge.
